Fuel Management

Well, closing has been delayed while they repair the Electric Trim. It's working slow at cold temps. Oh well, in the mean time, I've been looking at the AFM for the 1974-1976 Pathfinder. It talks about managing the fuel tanks. Is it really wise to burn an hour on one main tank then the other main until near empty and then the other main tank until near empty and then finally the tip tanks alternating a half hour each? I thought you were supposed to land on a main tank? Advice would be appreciated!
